FAQ
What is acupuncture and how does it work?
Acupuncture is one component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It uses needles to manipulate and balance the natural energy of the body. It is based on the concept that channels, or meridians, of energy run in regular patterns throughout the body and over its surface. Obstructions or irregularities in energy flow can create imbalances in the body leading to pain and disease.
Needling the acupuncture points can influence the meridian by unblocking the obstructions and re-establishing a healthy flow through the meridians. The improved energy flow and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilities and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.
Western science has also suggested several theories for how acupuncture works, including (1) conduction of electromagnetic signals, (2) activation of opioid systems (causing the release of endorphins and enkephalins) and (3) effecting changes in vasodilators such as histamine (which act to constrict or dilate blood vessels).
In addition to needle insertion, other procedures that may be performed include: Cupping, Gua Sha, and Tui Na (Eastern massage therapy). Cupping and Gua Sha stimulate the flow of blood within the superficial muscle layers and are used to release sore muscles, tension, and body aches.
Is acupuncture treatment safe?
Yes. Only sterile, single-use (disposable) needles are used. Acupuncturists are trained on proper needle insertion techniques and in the use of appropriate sterile procedures.
Is acupuncture painful?
Acupuncture needles are very thin, just a little thicker than a cat's whisker. The sensation caused by needle insertion varies, but most people feel no pain at all.
How long do treatments take?
The first visit may last for 1 to 1.5 hours to allow the practitioner to gather your background information. Follow-up visits will last from 30 minutes to 1 hour. The needles, once inserted, will usually be left in place from 20 to 30 minutes. Ultimately, the session length depends on the technique and desired results.
How can I get the most from my treatments?
Acupuncture is one part of a comprehensive approach to health and wellbeing. TCM combines the following to achieve an individualized holistic system for balanced health:
- Acupuncture
- Physical Exercise
- Nutrition
- Meditation
Before needle insertion, you may be asked about your health condition, lifestyle, and behavior. All of this information is used to obtain a complete picture of your treatment needs. Suggestions in the above areas may be offered to help you get the best results.
How should I prepare?
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing for easy access to acupuncture points.
- Don't come in on an empty stomach; however, don't eat large meals just before or after your visit.
- Refrain from overexertion, drugs, or alcohol for up to 6 hours after the visit.
- Between visits, take notes of any changes that you may have experienced.
Will my insurance cover acupuncture?
Insurance coverage varies from carrier to carrier. Contact your insurance provider to learn what kind of care is covered. Most company flexible spending accounts (FSAs) cover acupuncture treatments.
How much does it cost?
Average cost per session: $65
Friends and family referral discounts: $20
